Simon Birch produces a variety of media-based work, but is best known for his borderline abstract oil-on-canvas portraits. The artist uses distinct marks in his painting, not blending away edges to create a smooth surface. The colours used do not quite compliment each other and yet work with their differences to emphasize elements of the images that draw the focus of the viewer. This practise means that his paintings are striking in their aesthetic, the harsh marks and contrasting colours working together to conceive emotionally stimulating compositions.
